Game Changers Challenge Sprint event sparks innovation in the nuclear industry

A dynamic and fast-paced Game Changers Challenge Sprint event took place at Energus in Workington earlier this year, drawing 55 participants from Sellafield. The event was designed to identify key challenges that could be solved by seeking novel solutions through the Game Changers process.

The Challenge Sprint featured two themed sessions, each tackling specific issues within Sellafield Ltd and the broader nuclear industry: 

1. RAD (Remediation Accelerated Decommissioning) Sprint: Focused on asbestos challenges 
2. Characterisation Sprint: Concentrated on data collection challenges

Participants from across Sellafield brought their diverse skills and knowledge to collaboratively identify new high-impact challenges to be launched in 2024. The sprints were expertly facilitated by the Game Changers team, who utilised a range of interactive games, tools, and techniques to foster creative problem-solving and progression of ideas.

After an action-packed day of identifying, exploring and refining challenges, both sprints came together to present to the entire group in a session that highlighted the collaborative efforts and shared commitment to innovation within the nuclear industry.

Hilary Royston-Bishop, Research, Development and Innovation Manager at Sellafield Ltd, said ‘This was a fantastic event with two Sellafield teams and colleagues from our wider business coming together to create Game Changers challenge statements. With excellent facilitation by the FIS360 team and great energy on the day, it was a good opportunity to look at bigger issues outside of the day-to-day that we can solve to accelerate characterisation and decommissioning at Sellafield.’

The Game Changers team is now progressing towards development of these challenges into Game Changers challenge statements for launch soon.

The Game Changers Challenge Sprint event has set a strong foundation for future events and ongoing innovation and collaboration at Sellafield. By harnessing diverse perspectives and expertise, the event has paved the way for the development of solutions that will help to deliver Sellafield Ltd’s ongoing decommissioning mission.
